What is Femtosecond Cataract?

Femtosecond Cataract

Femtosecond laser technology has emerged as an invention that greatly increases the success rate of surgeries. Femtosecond laser technology, which is the biggest invention in eye surgery in recent years, has enabled ophthalmologists with high manual dexterity to perform very successful surgeries.

Medical conditions should be evaluated first in patients who will undergo cataract surgery with the help of Femtolsecond laser. Accurate biometric measurements are an important issue before this method.

SURGERY PROCESS

With Femtosecond Cataract (femtosecond laser), the eye is anesthetized with drops during surgery. In this way, the surgery is performed without anesthesia, pain and without a knife. Thanks to this method, the most important stages of the surgery are performed without the use of a knife, which eliminates the risk of complications. With this method, a multifocal lens is placed into the eye. In this way, cataracts as well as distance and near vision problems are eliminated. With the imaging techniques of the method, surgery can be performed more easily and quickly with the help of computers. The stages of the surgery can be listed as follows:

Planning phase: First of all, an examination and planning is performed before the surgery. Meanwhile, corneal thickness is measured and the lengths and locations of the incisions are planned.

Anesthesia: After planning, drops are placed in the patient's eye and numbness is achieved.

Fixation: Then vacuum is applied to fix and visualize the patient's eye. The patient does not feel any pain during this process.

Disintegration: Then, all incisions and the disintegration of the lens are performed for approximately 50-60 seconds.

Placement of the lens: In the final stage, the remaining particles are cleaned and the new intraocular lens is placed.

In the femtosecond laser method, the duration of the entire surgery is approximately 3 - 5 minutes. During the surgery, if possible, continuous communication should be established with the patient and the patient should be guided. With the help of femtosecond laser, different personalized algorithms can be applied during treatment. This is considered one of the most important advantages of the method.

WHAT ARE THE ADVANTAGES?

  • One of the most important steps in cataract surgery is the correct preparation of the capsule. The capsule is cut in the most accurate way using the femtosecond laser, ensuring that the lens to be placed in the eye is shaped in the most accurate way.

  • Before the artificial lens is placed in the eye, the natural lens must be broken down within the eye. This shredding process can be most easily done with a femtosecond laser. Thanks to this method, your doctor also has the opportunity to clean comfortably.

  • Thanks to the femtosecond laser, the surrounding tissue is not harmed during the disintegration of the natural lens. In addition, lens removal takes less time than classical methods.

  • Although the surgery takes longer with the femtosecond laser method, it is a more advanced method because it is a cleaner procedure and provides sharper vision.

  • Unfortunately, femtosecond laser is not a treatment method that can be applied to every patient. This method cannot be applied in patients with partial whitening of the cornea, very white cataracts, lens position changes, and in patients whose pupil is not dilated sufficiently. It would be the best decision for patients experiencing such problems to have an operation using the phaco method.

  • It has very little effect and harm on surrounding tissues.

  • Since the patient will recover in a short time, he can return to his normal life immediately.

  • Smoother and sharper incisions are made.
